Description: Practice versus theory: The value of Technology Education
Technology Education is a core element of the New Zealand Curriculum and encompasses a lot more than just woodwork or digital technology. Because of its practical nature, it can be difficult to assess and is sometimes misunderstood or sidelined by subjects which are perceived as more ‘academic’. Professor Williams will describe his research, which aims to assess practice, and in so doing, help overcome the false dichotomy between theory and practice. He will argue that technology needs to be recognised as a broad and highly-valued subject.

I have been with the Faculty of Education since 1997. Over the years I have changed roles many times and am now responsible for the Faculty of Education's Website and many contract and research sub-sites, working within the Innovation and Technology Team within the Faculty.

I have extensive experience with the PHP/MySQL programming environment and use and configuration of Wordpress, and other Content Management Systems. In 2003 our team created the Faculty's web portal "edLlinked" which provided personalised content to students and staff. During 2012-2013 a new portal based on the Laravel PHP framework was developed and is now in production. In 2011 we developed our external website using Wordpress as the CMS, https://education.waikato.ac.nz.

I have an interest in Facebook development, mobile devices, elearning materials, online usability and gaming. In my free time I train in Taekwon-Do as a 1st dan Black belt.
