This pathway is open to those who have a strong commitment to Māori education and wish to work in a supportive whānau environment. Kaupapa Māori underpins the content of particular papers on offer. Some fluency in speaking, reading and writing te reo Māori is required.
Successful applicants will show strong commitment to the ongoing development of their proficiency in te reo Māori.
Complete the teacher education selection process
On this programme you will gain practical knowledge and skills in understanding and facilitating quality teaching and learning programmes for Māori and English medium classrooms in Aotearoa. You will also be expected to develop knowledge and skills in critiqing and producing high quality Māori language teaching resources that support learning. There are five compulsory kaupapa Māori papers that will be completed by all candidates.
In addition you will complete compulsory Professional Education papers, which examine cultural and linguistic diversity settings, learning and teaching, curriculum and assessment and classroom management.
Curriculum papers enhance your knowledge of subjects such as the arts, environmental and sustainable education, health and physical education, language and literacy, mathematics, science, social studies and technology. Teachers in Aotearoa use Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, and /or the NZ Curriculum and/or iwi curriculum documents to guide the teaching and learning process.
The practicum is related to papers in the programme and involves practical teaching experience in mainly Level 1 and /or 2 Māori medium settings. Some experience in an English medium classroom is available upon request. During your practicum or full-day placements you will undertake observations and carry out set-tasks.
The BTchg (Primary) consists of completing a total of 20 (360 points) 100, 200 and 300 level papers over three years.
