Bioethics Education

Project Dates: 2006-2007
Director: Professor Alister Jones
Project members: Rosemary DeLuca, Cathy Bunting, Anne McKim and Kathy Saunders.

Project

The focus of this project, supported with funding from Toi te Taiao: The Bioethics Council, was the research and development of a model for the teaching and learning of bioethics in New Zealand schools.

Specifically, a “toolkit” was developed to enable and support the introduction of bioethics thinking into a broad range of existing education programmes. Classroom-based trials were conducted to feed back into the development cycle, and the resulting resources are available on the New Zealand Biotechnology Learning Hub (www.biotechlearn.org.nz).

A “toolkit” approach was adopted because one of the issues in New Zealand at the current time is the notion of curriculum overload.

A national and international team helped ensure that the resources are both forward thinking and relevant to the New Zealand educational context.
